GREG'S BLOG How To Choose Happiness In Your Life

Why You Should Question Conventional Thinking

Some conventional thinking is good; some of it is terrible! Do not be one of those people who floats along blindly through life accepting all the scripts that other people hand out. Choose to question conventional thinking and then wisely embrace the good you find after asking hard questions. Nonconformity can be wonderful, if you’re moving in the right direction. Life is so much better when you find great answers to hard questions.

Conventional Thinking

I want to challenge you to do something and also ask you how you maybe have done it. The invitation is to question conventional thinking! I would love to know: — In the comments section below.

  • What things have you questioned?
  • What is some of the conventional thinking that you’ve  questioned and has brought excellent results to your life?

I wanted to bring out this challenge because I think that it’ s so important. Too many of us are just going through life embracing or accepting or acquiescing to a socially conditioned path! We’re accepting scripts that others are handing out and accepting conventional thinking that was just given to us! And nobody ever stops  to think that there may be a better way! And I believe that each of you has genius and greatness in you. I believe that there is a unique path and a unique mission  for each family and for each individual. BUT, you have to question conventional thinking before it is too late!

Too many people don’t ask until it’s too late like Ivan Ilyich, Tolstoy’s character in his book “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” who doesn’t ask until the end of his life, on his deathbed, and he says: “What if my whole life has been wrong!” But it’s to late then! And the exchange rate has been way too high.

So, I want you to question conventional thinking. But I want you to do it with the right intent! And it’s not just to do something different or just to break away. Some of us just do it to be rebellious, but you don’t want to do that! Don’t do it just because it’s different. I want you to think through it. And you are going to find that some, or a lot, of the conventional thinking is okay and might fit in your life! BUT, at least you’ve THOUGHT through it!! At least it’s deliberate. At least you are choosing it! And that’s the big thing.

Some of it you’ll find, doesn’t take your life where you want it to go. You may want to live differently, to live unconventionally, to live deliberately, to live life on your terms and not fit into the little plan they have prescribed for other people!

Ask Good Questions and Get Great Answers

So whether it’s social or financial patterns and habits, where you live, how you live, your work, mental, emotional or physical patterns… just look around and ask good questions.

Here’s the most important principle,  and I hope that you really let it sink in. One of the best thing we can do in life to can ensure that we have a great life is to ASK really HARD QUESTIONS and get really GREAT ANSWERS!

How to Stop Caring What Others Think

Life is so good! And it is so individual. Each of us has a special path to follow. You have a mission! You were born to do something great. So do it; and stop caring what others think.  Live greatly, and leave others’ opinion of you and your life, with them.

Live Your Life on Your Terms

One of the most important things you’ll ever do is to stop caring about what other people think! Some people think that it’s impossible to care about the person and not care what they think. But I think that the opposite is true.

I grew up in a broken home. I was on my own in an early age, and I struggled with insecurity, with confidence, with depression. I was so timid and so shy! I couldn’t look somebody in the eye, let alone look at a camera and talk! I couldn’t get in front of a crowd and especially couldn’t talk to girls. I just lived in a shell and walked around with my head down hoping that no one would talk to me. And I lived with this fear of what other people thought. People would make fun of me for all different kinds of reasons, and I lived with that. And I had to overcome that. I had to grow through it.I didn’t want to have walls around my heart, my mind and my life. I didn’t want to be bitter or hurtful, I wanted to love people sincerely and genuinely. I wanted to have great relationships and great connections with people without giving too much power and allowing too much influence from what others thought. At some point, you have to live independent of the opinions of the others so you can live your life at YOUR LEVELS and YOUR TERMS!

How to Live Unconventionally

If you want to go for greatness and want to live unconventionally, if you want to do some crazy things that are great in a great way, then a lot of people are going to criticise you and a lot of people are going  to be bitter. You should hear some of the things that people said to us because we’ve lived unconventionally. We don’t play by the rules of society. We don’t live according to the dictates of social conditioning. We’ve taken our six children to go out and travel the world, make a difference and live a great life. And a lot of people have tried to tear us down and have said horrible things about us. And at some point, you just have to disconnect yourself and say ‘you know what! I value and respect you but I am not going to take on your crap! I’m not going to take what you’re saying into my life. I’m going to disconnect.’

And you may be wondering how to do it. And here is what I’ve learned. It doesn’t always come instantly, but it can. I think that I learned it the slow and hard way, but I would say that the number one way is to have a vision. To have a crystal clear vision of who you are becoming and where are you going. And if you know that, if you’ve got it so clear in your mind and you are just heading there confidently; knowing that it’s great. It’s not pathetic, it’s not mediocre, it’s not bad or negative. It’s a good thing, it’s a great thing! You have these desires, these aspirations and this drive to do something great. Hold on to that vision, then it doesn’t matter what anyone else says. Because you know where you’re going and you’re actually taking steps in that direction. At that point you have to say ‘I love and respect you, but I am going to live my life’

Even when family say all of these things you’ve got to say “Sorry. We love you so much but we’ve thought through this very carefully, we’ve studied it out and we have a vision of where we’re going and what we’re going to accomplish.” And if you hold on to that vision, then you get going and it’s awesome and you can be confident in it. Then you get to the point where you don’t even have to think about it. Somebody can say something  great or somebody can say something horrible and you can live independent of the opinions of the others because you know where you are going and who you are becoming, and it’s awesome!

There is greatness in you, huge potential, there is  genius in you. Do not allow others to tear you down and do not give them POWER over your DREAMS! Get out and make them HAPPEN!

This One Mindset Is Making or Breaking Your Life

Literally, what we think about we bring about. Our minds are powerful beyond our understanding. Your mindset determines who you become and what you accomplish. As a man thinketh, so is he. Seriously, your life will be directly determined by your mindset.

The Difference Between “Can’t” and “Won’t”

I have had the wonderful privilege to travel around the world with my family. I have had the privilege  to meet thousands of incredible people, coach, mentor, speak to large audiences and help youth, adults, rich, poor of many different races, backgrounds and languages. It’s been such a wonderful journey! And one thing I’ve learned that there is a huge difference between CAN’T and WON’T.

Playing The Victim Role Won’t Get You Anyway

Often we get focused on limitations and sometimes we get tempted to play the victim role! In reality, many of us are using the word CAN’T, when really the message we’re conveying is WON’T.  Maybe it’s because of a high price. Everything great has a great price tag. And to often we say ” I can’t do that” when really it’s won’t. ” I won’t pay the price. I won’t get up early. I won’t stay up late. I won’t read those books. I won’t sacrifice some of those silly and trivial things around me.” Get rid of those things and get them out of your life so that you can live in an excellent way.

Set High Standards and High values

I want to challenge you today to set really high standards, get your values super high and be proud and pleased with that quest for excellence. And don’t allow the critics to tear you down.

Stop saying I can’t and start doing it, get that vision and start doing it. And the most important, stop allowing yourself to say “I can’t”. Whatever it takes to be great you will do it because greatness is in you, genius is in you, and awesome-sauce is in you!

So let it come out, do what it takes and join this journey for greatness, for awesome life and for becoming your very best self. Think about this for a second and let it permeate your soul. Envision your potential!   Don’t ever let that “can’t” or that “won’t” get in your way. Clear that path. Forget about what others say to tear you down and to try to stop you. Set a quest for awesome, high standards and super high values. Live that unconventional, great life. Go out and make it happen.

This One Habit Makes You Who You Are

Leaders are readers! And what they read determines who they become.  Mediocre people don’t read, or occasionally read some frothy book. And what they read determines who they become.  Input determines output. Begin a habit today of consistently reading from the best books for the rest of your life. It will literally shape who you become. In fact, what you read or fail to read is already shaping who you are.

Input Determines Output

Oscar Wilde once said: “It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines who you will be when you can’t help it.”

I love that thought! What we choose to read, what we choose to see, what we choose to expose ourselves to, and what we choose to do at our free time determines who we become! You can’t say you want to be one thing and fill your mind and your life with something else. It just doesn’t work like that!

Input determines output, this is the law of meritocracy. You get what you deserve. It’s the law of karma. You get back what you give out. And if garbage comes in, garbage will come out. It’s all of these ideas are the law of the harvest. You can’t plant corn and hope for tomatoes! It just won’t work.

So , I want to challenge you to create a list. If you don’t have a list of great books you are reading from, make one today!

(You can find great lists at and

If you don’t have  a list, get one and work on it all the time.

Books Can Literally Change Your Life

kindlI am constantly reading books.I finished two books yesterday and I am usually working on three or four at the time. I always have several audio books, digital books and a couple of paper books that I got with me constantly so that I always have something to do. Even for a brief moment. Any moment where I’m reading a couple pages, a couple paragraph or a chapter. Because what happens is that the more great ideas you expose yourself to, the more you and I learn how to think. And to think about the great questions and great ideas and the bigger things! It’s what’s called “biblio-therapy”. “Biblio” for the books and “therapy” is the change and growth. It’s’ changing and transforming your whole life through the reading of a great book. And I promise, it works!

I grew up in a broken home and I ended up on my own at an early age struggling and fighting through those dark hard  years. They were horrible! I was so desperate to leave the depression, loneliness and being broke and ignorant!  And books have literally changed my life! And now I am traveling THE WORLD with my family!! Doing work that I absolutely love and I’m on the quest of becoming a superb human being. All because of books!

And an actual book can’t change your life of course. It’s the ideas that you have to plant in the garden of your mind and they will start to grow.  And I wholeheartedly believe that what Oscar Wilde said is true! What you and I choose to read, will make us who we become.

So read fantastic books and make the most of yourself.

How to Improve Your Life, and Make Your Days Go Better

How you live each day, is in the end, how you live your life! With that sobering truth in our minds, we want and need to live each day greatly. And you can! There are simple, proven strategies that you can practice every day to live your life greatly.  Find out how to improve your life in this short blog post.

Don’t Let Your Negative Thoughts Control You

Denning Family in TulumWe are living here in beautiful Costa Rica around the southern coast and I am learning how to surf and I just love it. We’re having a great time.

This last week we went out surfing several times, with tons of  paddling into the surf. I got sunburns, I was tired and stayed up late reading a phenomenal book. So what happened is that the next morning at 4:00 AM my alarm goes off and I felt like death! I had stayed up late, I was sunburned, and my muscles were sore. And I noticed what happened, and maybe this happens to you as well. My thoughts started going negative! What are you going to do? The alarm goes off,  and you have the opportunity to get up, get going and make your day awesome OR you can hit the snooze button. Or maybe your thoughts start turning to the negative and all of a sudden you’re throwing yourself a pity party before you’ve even made it out of bed!

How to Make Your Days Go Better

So I want to talk today about how to make your days go better. Most people go through life in turmoil, and stress and frustration. A lot of people are just hurting, their days suck and they go through life hoping that their day goes right, hoping that things work out, and  waiting for someone to come and make their day instead of making themselves!

Simple Key Points to Make Your Life Better

So I want to give you some key points to make your days go better:

#1 Start The Day Right

Because how you start the day is how the day goes. Start with power thoughts. If you catch yourself with negative thoughts at the morning you can change that, you really can. Practice smiling! Write down some power thoughts; quotes and things that get you in the right frame of mind. Do not allow yourself to stay down and negative! Watch this other video I just made about the power of controlling your mind. The mind control that we learn from the excellent book: Unbroken. We have to control our minds. So first, make sure your mind is going in the right direction.

#2 Create Good Habits

Second, people are sabotaging their own days without even knowing it. From the very beginning, they are setting themselves for failure instead of success. So number two is to create some habits that will get your days going in the right direction. I would suggest working from a list, just before bed  quickly jot down some of the things that you want to do; your top priorities. And in the morning review those and  write some goals. And this can be quick!

I would also suggest an Hour of Power in the morning, where you’re reading and doing great things. Look for my other videos on that. I also have a great product called: (How to Totally Transform your Life Before Breakfast)

So set up these little habits that get you going in the right direction. Guard your thinking, control your mind, set up some habits that start your day right and it will get you into the right motion and in the right attitude of mind. Make sure you have a great posture, be excited and optimistic about your day and start making your days go right, instead of just hoping they’ll work out and trying to live by default.

So get up each day excited and alive, get going, make things happen and make sure you are controlling and making your days awesome!

How to Handle Feedback and Criticism

Seeking and receiving feedback is by far one of the best ways to improve yourself. Feedback is not an insult. But you and I have to be willing and disciplined to receive feedback and constructive criticism in the right attitude and then make changes. That’s not always easy. In this blog post I discuss how to handle feedback and criticism in a way that will benefit you for the rest of your life.

Feed Back / Criticism

I have some quick questions for you.

  • How do you handle feedback?
  • When somebody gives you some feedback or some criticism, how do you handle it?
  • Do you take an honest look at yourself?

  • Do you immediately get defensive?

  • Do you turn on the offense and start attacking?

Feedback Is Not an Insult

Feedback is not an insult. And something that I want to work on and something that we all need to work on, is asking for soliciting, good feedback and responding appropriately to it.  Because having that outside set of eyes, someone to look at us and tell us and telling us what we could do better, is one of the most effective ways to grow. So if you really want to grow, and if you really want to take your life to the next level, then consistently ask for feedback. And remember, feedback is not and insult. It’s not an attack. Some people are criticizing and cynical and might be tearing you down. There are a lot of cynics and critics who don’t contribute and don’t help, but find someone you trust and love and who knows you well. Ask them for feedback on how you can be a better person.

And if you and I are consistently looking for feedback and responses, and then make those changes and adjustments, we’ll consistently climb up that ladder on the quest for GREATNESS! That journey towards EXCELLENCE!

Feedback is essential, so receive it with humility and respond to it. I’ll do it and I challenge you to do it.

Let’s make our lives awesome!

Worldschooling– Why You Should Do It

World schooling, as we define it, is the best way to get a phenomenal education for yourself and your children. It’s the perfect combination of study and experience. It’s homeschooling and intensive traveling. Learn about something in the best books and resources, then go experience for yourself. My son Parker (10) and I had a once in a life time experience together. You’re gonna love it!

What Is WorldSchooling?

Today I want to talk about Worldschooling. I want to talk about what it is and why I think you should do it. Worldschooling  for us is getting a GREAT EDUCATION. And in my view, great education and learning comes from three sources:

  • Great books, great study (interviewing people and learning)

  • Experiences (getting out, touching, feeling, and having great experiences)

  • Inspiration (it just comes from heaven and just lights up your mind )

And WORLDSCHOOLING incorporates all of those.

Sea Turtles Experience

Let me share an experience I had recently. It was this week when I went out surfing with my son Parker at 5:00 in the morning, and while we were surfing and watching the sun rise over Costa Rica, and we saw a bunch of baby sea turtles, swimming out to start their life’s journey. I caught one and we played with it on our board for a little bit and then released it and let it go on it’s journey, and it was an awesome experience. It was a great way to start the day and it was so meaningful and awesome.

So it’s about  getting out and having these experiences. You have to feel, touch and sense. Now when we read about sea turtles in books or online, there’s a connection there, and that power and excitement is there because we experienced it and made it happen.

Somethings Can Be Learnt Only If You Had The Opportunity to Experience Them

I want to encourage you to consider that. Whatever your educational goals are; homeschooling, unschooling, public or private schooling, whatever you are doing, incorporate great experiences around the world. And yes, I think travel has to be a part of that. Because there are things that you can only learn by going out and experiencing another culture, another society, other people, food and things. When we’re traveling and we’re intense and engaged in a new country and we’re embracing everything it has to offer, the growth is unbelievable!

WorldScooling Is The Perfect Combination of Study and Experience

That is great Worldschooling. We take tons of books all over with us, we study intensely, we’re curious, we’re voracious learners, we’re getting out and creating great experiences and memories and learning at a phenomenal level.

How To Control Your Mind. “UNBROKEN”–Mind Control!

“Unbroken” is a great book and an incredible story. (Buy it here: think one of the top lessons from this remarkable tale is mind control. Each of us must learn to control and direct our thoughts. What we think about, we bring about.  How to control your mind? How to control your thoughts? Find out how in this blog post.

At this time, I am reading  a book titled “Unbroken” which is really fantastic! There are tons of great principles and life lessons in it. Unbroken” by –Laura Hillenbrand– is an incredible story and a wonderful book!

Book review:

“The story includes a part of the American experience amid World War II — the mercilessness of the Japanese — that, in a period of Toyotas and Sonys and Hideki Matsui, has been totally overlooked. (Overlooked in the United States, that is: Japanese sensitivities on the subject remain adequately high that Hillenbrand declines to recognize her interpreters there.) It’s likewise yet another demonstration of the fearlessness and inventiveness of America’s Greatest Generation, alongside its brilliant, irrepressible American-style contemptuousness: simply listening to the epithets — numerous unprintable here — that the P.O.W’s. offered on their watchmen makes you go gaga for these warriors.”

 The Power of Mind

On page 52 it says that they were determined, no matter what happened to their body, they were determined to keep control of their mind. And so they would do whatever they had to do to stimulate their sense and mind. And that kept their mind sharp.

One thing that I want to share is the Power of the Mind. it is important that you keep your mind sharp and that you keep control of your mind. In other words, there are so many different things going on and distracting us and pulling us in different directions. And there are just very few of us who are doing an excellent job at both controlling and directing our thoughts.

It’s hard to believe that any human being could endure so much. Mind control made the difference; and it will make the difference in our lives too!

Great Lessons from a Funny Story

And I am going to tell you a funny story. I had a football coach when I was a kid in Texas who had a very big ring. And if we were dining around or not paying attention he just gives us a thumb on our chest with that ring, and says in a Southern accent “Keep your mind on your business” .

And I loved that, I mean keep your mind on your business, stay focus and control your thoughts. Just get that lays focus on what you want to do and need to accomplish and make sure you always control your mind!

How to Prioritize Your Life and Live Accordingly.

How to prioritize your life is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.
Most people do not live according to their priorities.
They say one thing, but their actions and habits are incongruent. Learn to clearly identify your top priorities and then set up your goals, schedules, actions and habits to actually do what you know.

Feed Your Spirit

You and I need to have our priorities straight, though it can be so frustrating sometimes because we know what we should do but we struggle a lot in doing it. As I am coaching and mentoring I find that people do not do what they know they should, therefore, here is a great lesson that helped in solidifying things for me.

No Bible No Breakfast

It was just after Rachel and I were married and we went out to visit my mom’s cousin –I have never met him before–. We knew that he lived in a beautiful mountain  town just outside of Sun Valley Idaho. So we went there and stayed for sometime and I have the habit of getting up early in the morning to read scripture and great books.

So I got up at 5:30; it was cold winter time, I went down and set on fire and he was already down there reading his bible! Then I asked him how long he has been doing this great habit and said that he was doing it for years and years. I asked him again how he actually can discipline himself to do that though it is very hard? And he said, –well, I know that it is as  important as to spirit and nourish my mind as it is my body! And  I made a commitment with god, no bible no breakfast–.

I found that this was really awesome! Because reading the bible and nourishing his spirit was at the top of his priorities.

Put First Things First

Thus, I want to share this idea with you. You need to put first things first and you need to DISCIPLINE yourself. My cousin refused to feed his body until he first fed his soul, therefore, I want to challenge you to do the same thing. Set up a system, a rule, a commitment or anything that works for you well and that helps you to put your priorities first. Where the things that matter most, get done.

We should not be going through life and struggling for years and years doing things just like that. Instead, we need to be doing the things we know we should be doing.

So come up with your own little commitment and make sure every day to do the things that are most important.

How to Take Your Life From ‘Blah’ to AWESOME!

Life is just far too short to be lame! And yes, it’s a choice. You get to choose. Life is what you make of it. Make it awesome.  In this blog post I share the proven principles that helped me move from a very difficult start and living on the streets, to living an incredible life.

Is It Possible to Live an Awesome Life!

I want to tell you how to take your life from ‘blah’ to AWESOME! It’s totally possible and you should do it!

I often ask people what their most dominant emotion is and how they feel most of the time and I want to ask you that. So take a minute to consider what you feel most of the time. For a lot of the people the response is frustration or anger. And a lot of other people say it’s just ‘blah’!

So I want to share three quick principles to help move your life from ‘blah’ to awesome!

#1 Do Things  That Excite You

If you have a passion, get excited about it, work on it, develop talents and spend some time doing those things that excite you. Do something that lights your fire so that when you think about it, when you talk about it and when you do it, it makes you feel alive!

#2 Do Things That Are Meaningful

A lot of people go through life without any real meaning. They’re not doing anything that matters. So ask yourself that. What have I done this year that really matters? Don’t allow yourself to cheat and give bogus answers. Really take a solid and honest look to at your life. What am I really doing that matters?

So do the things that matter, find your purpose and live it.

#3 Do Things That Are Fulfilling

Do things that are fulfilling and things that bring tremendous  rewards to your life. It may be expressing your talents or, it might be in serving others and helping others be happier. Do something that just brings so much fulfilment and makes you feel great when you are doing it!

Live an Awesome Life

So if you’re in a job that is kind of ‘blah’ job, look for a change. If you are living in an area that is kind of ‘blah’ right now, move. If your marriage and relationships are kind of ‘blah’, improve them. Get excited about life again and get going! Do something that excites you, do something that is meaningful and really matters and do something that is really fulfilling!
